The Awakening of Travis Bickle

TAXI-DRIVER-final

One of my favorite movies is Taxi Driver. It’s amazing, and the main reason is the performance of Robert De Niro.

This portrait is my attempt to pay homage to him and the movie.

The title refers to the moment Travis realizes his mission and prepares himself to its undertaking. It is truly magic and madding.

I wanted this to be fast, stark, and violent! So I put on Black Sabbath’s paranoid album to get in the mood.

I used yellow as the dominant color to symbolize the taxi cab that he spent most his time in. I painted blood on him because the ending of the movie is a bloodbath, and I spent time on his eyes to give him the menacing, psychotic look. Because he is menacing and psychotic.

I put a rough illustration of a city skyline in the background to symbolize the decaying mess that NYC was in the seventies.

The pencil was just a quick sketch to get the composition correct.

I then started doing the painting the way I do all of them;

finalize the sketch,
